Friggatriskaidekaphobia: the fear of Friday the 13th.
I am not a superstitious person. Not at all. I don’t mind walking under a ladder which stands against a wall. The number 13 means nothing than 12 + 1 for me and if I had counted all the mirrors and others glass objects I broke, I would be unlucky for the rest of my life. At least, if I had been superstitious. However, if there is one thing my student life in Tilburg led me to believe, it is the magic power of “one beer”...
As a student, you probably have encountered at least one of those nights. At least I have. Those nights for which especially the next morning is important. On those nights you only want to go to the cinema, watch the newest movie everyone is talking about and then get your bicycle and go home, to bed. So far so good. However, most of the times there is just one more step involved. There is always one of yours friends who says: let’s have one beer before going home. At that moment you’re just one answer away from waking up with a huge hangover the next morning.
The next morning you wake up, with indeed, a huge hangover. What you could do is waste your time trying to remember what went wrong. You can save yourself a whole lot a time by immediately going back to the moment you said yes to that one crucial question the evening before. Shall we have one beer?
I still don’t know what it is with that single beer, but they always seem to end up with a huge hangover. That’s why I call it the magic power of “one beer”. Maybe something has to do with the stimulation of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which has a positive effect on acts that maintain drinking, but somehow always the nights on which you decide to have just one beer end up badly.
Like I told, I am not a superstitious person, but please, if you really have something very important to do next morning, say NO to that single question. It will save you a lot of trouble, for you are not another victim of the magic power of one beer. Say NO and you’ll thank me for that…
